The word ‘hospitality’ has been derived from the Latin word, ‘hospes,’ which means the protector of guests. It originally referred to nursing pilgrims in monasteries when they fell ill or starved. The essence of “Omotenashi,” meaning hospitality in Japanese, developed from the meanings of ‘heartfelt hospitality’ or ‘cordial nursing.’ Inheriting the philosophy of St. Marianna Hospital, “to provide loving medical care which respects the dignity of life to heal the sick,” the spirit of ‘hospes’ is expressed through the artworks.
